Gunpla Guide – An Overview of the Different Model Kits

GUNPLA stands for "Gundam Plastic Model" and is a combination of "Gundam" and "Plastic Model". It refers to the model kits from Mobile Suit Gundam, produced by Bandai.

These model kits come in various sizes (scale) and difficulty levels (grades). GUNPLA has been a popular hobby among mecha fans worldwide since the 1980s.

Entry Grade (EG)

Scale: 1/144
Difficulty: Very easy
Features:

  • Perfect for beginners, no tools required
  • Few parts, yet good articulation
  • No stickers or decals required
  • Similar to HG, but with fewer details

High Grade (HG)

Scale: 1/144
Difficulty: Easy to medium
Features:

  • Good balance between detail and build complexity
  • No inner mechanics like MG/PG
  • Many kits from spin-offs and side stories
  • Ideal for quick builds or beginners

Master Grade (MG)

Scale: 1/100
Difficulty: Medium to high
Features:

  • Detailed inner frame with articulated structure
  • Usually includes realistic decals and panel lines
  • Better proportions than HG
  • Some kits feature LEDs or special parts

Mega Size (MS)

Scale: 1/48
Difficulty: Easy to medium
Features:

  • Very large but with fewer parts
  • Easy to assemble yet impressive in size
  • Less articulation than MG or PG

No Grade (NG)

Scale: Varies (1/144, 1/100)
Difficulty: Medium
Features:

  • Older kits without an official grade
  • Less detail than MG, often simpler construction
  • Sometimes harder to find, especially older models

Perfect Grade (PG)

Scale: 1/60
Difficulty: Very high
Features:

  • Highest level of detail and quality
  • Often includes LEDs, moving parts, and metal components
  • Highly complex inner skeleton structure
  • Many parts, challenging build

Real Grade (RG)

Scale: 1/144
Difficulty: High
Features:

  • High level of detail in a small scale
  • Includes an inner frame structure like MG
  • Many small parts and decals
  • More challenging than HG, but visually stunning

Super Deformed (SD)

Scale: No fixed scale (~8 cm tall)
Difficulty: Easy
Features:

  • Cartoon-like, cute design with a large head
  • Few parts, easy to assemble
  • Less articulation and detail
  • Ideal for quick builds or collectors
